Awards with Altitude

This week 4 young members of the Scout Association were awarded some of Scouting's top honours - at a special presentation high in the Swiss Mountains.

Cromwell District Commissioner Tony Best presented Scouts Aimee Barkway, Dan Harlock and Sarah Newport with their Chief Scouts Gold Award - the highest any Scout can earn. He also presented Explorer Fenella Allery with one of the top Awards for that Section, her Chief Scouts Diamond Award.

The presentation took place as part of a Cromwell Mountain Club expedition to Switzerland for two weeks of fun and adventure. There were 7 Scouts from the 1st Fenstanton & Hilton Scout Group (aged 12.5 to 14), 13 Explorer Scouts from St Ives (aged 14-18) and then another 16 from Scout Network (aged 18-25), Scout Fellowship and leaders from across Cromwell District.

In search of mountains (well it is the Cromwell MOUNTAIN Club) the destination was Kandersteg, the International Scout Centre, located at 1200 metres above sea level 65km south of Bern.

Whilst away the adventurers made the most of the opportunities on offer. During the trip they swam in a mountain lake, hiked and climbed through the mountains, hurtled at speed down a 750m dry bobsleigh run, travelled in a cable car, visited nearby towns and cities, tried freshly made cheese at an Alpine cheesery and stayed overnight in a Mountain Hut earning everyone their High Adventure badge.

During the trip all 7 Scouts (Aimee Barkway, Ryan Clover, Sam Dolby, Dan Harlock, Angus Hughes, Scott Lockwood and Sarah Newport) earnt their 50 nights Away badges it's rare for even one Scout in a Troop to achieve this amazing record so to have so many at one time is fantastic.

On his return Tony Best said " Everyone had a truly fantastic time and were keen to make the most of the adventure on offer. The Scouts and Explorers were a real credit to themselves and the Scout Association. The effort from all the adults involved was rewarded by the attitude and achievements of the youngsters and adults alike"

There has never been a more exciting time for children and adults to join Scouting as 2007 will see the Scout Association celebrate it's centenary. To find out how you can join the adventure, or to help make it happen, visit Cambridgeshire Scouting
