Weekly Policing - Fenstanton District 26 Feb 2020

Posted: 27/02/2020

Good Evening, Fenstanton District Members –

Here is our weekly summary of offences and incidents affecting your community, reported to police during the period 18th to 25th February:

Fenstanton - Bogus Meter Readers:

Police are aware of reports in the village relating to bogus meter readers calling at people’s houses. One incident that was reported to police happened at a house on Church Leys on Tuesday evening, 25th February, in which a man knocked on the door at around 7:15 pm and asked to read the meter. The occupants could not read the identification card that he help up at the window and told him it was too late and to go away. The man was wearing a high-vis jacket, but no-one noticed any gas company van parked anywhere nearby. (Ref CC-25022020-0422)

Police advice is always to be wary of cold-callers knocking at the door – and you do not have to let anyone into your home that you are unsure of.

Trading Standards advise following a Three Step Plan when someone unexpected calls:

1. If in doubt, keep them out – do not let anyone pressure you into opening the door

2. Be prepared and be in control – have a list of key contact telephone numbers handy so you can check up on cold-callers using a reliable telephone number. You have the right to tell anyone to go away and not to return

3. Call a neighbour or the Police if you are suspicious – if a crime is in progress, call 999.
