The Lakes Business Park, Fenstanton – Police are investigating a break-in and burglary at a unit on The Lakes Business Park that happened in the early hours of Saturday morning, 12th June. When an alarm started sounding, three or four hooded suspects dressed in black were seen leaving the unit, carrying several boxes of tools to a waiting car and then driving off. Police hope that CCTV footage will help in the investigation. (Ref 35/36638/21)

Headlands, Fenstanton – On Tuesday evening, 15th June, police received a call reporting an on-going problem with youths not wearing helmets and riding a moped across a park near Headlands, on most evenings. The incident has been passed to the Neighbourhood Policing Team for patrols in the area to be aware. (Ref CC-15062021-0478)

An Item Of Local News From The Police Web-Site:

A St Ives man was sentenced to 2 years and 4 months in jail at Peterborough Crown Court last Friday, 4th June, after pleading guilty to attempting to incite a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity at an earlier hearing.

The man had used an on-line messaging app to contact what he thought was a 13-year-old girl, although it was in fact an under-cover police officer.

More details are on the police web-site at:

And Finally … Census Text Scam

A Somersham Ecops subscriber contacted me this week to let me know about a scam text he has received about the recent UK national Census.

The text reads as follows: “CENSUS: There is missing information from your Census application. Update your application – visit …” – followed by a suspicious web-address.

The text may go on to threaten you with a fine if you do not comply.

This kind of text is most definitely a scam, and you should NOT click on the link to the web-address in the text message. The government will not issue a fine so long as you have sent in your Census form.

The Census Office has issued the following information about this kind of scam:

“We will not contact you via a text message, email or phone call asking for your details or regarding a fine …. Please do not engage or respond to these messages and do not click on any links provided … If you wish to report the scam to us, you can send us a message using our web-form, providing as much detail as possible.”

More details are on the Census Office web-page at:
https://census.gov.uk/your-data-and-security/how-we-will-contact-or-visit-you

You can also send any suspicious text message that you may receive to the National Cyber Security Centre by simply forwarding it to 7726. This is a free service and enables your Internet Service Provider to investigate.

My thanks to the Ecops subscriber for sending me the details of this scam.

And Finally … Burglary Prevention Advice
Now that summer is here, the warmer weather brings opportunities for burglars to take advantage of open windows, doors left unlocked, and people spending more time in their gardens.

Police advise that we follow these steps to avoid becoming a victim of burglary:

• Lock all doors and windows when not in the house;

• Don’t leave valuables on display;

• Lock outbuildings and sheds;

• Report any suspicious activity, using the 101 non-emergency number or the on-line reporting tool on the police web-site.

Recruitment and training of police officers in Cambridgeshire is changing and a new scheme called the Policing Education Qualifications Framework is being introduced. As part of this, the Constabulary is now running a Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) programme.

Under the PCDA, new entrants will be entered onto a 3-year degree apprenticeship run by Anglia Ruskin University, involving a combination of class learning and on-the-job experience. Tuition fees will be paid by the police and recruits will also be paid a salary whilst they learn.

The recruitment scheme has now been extended until the end of May. More details are on the police web-site at:
