BBC programme to reveal Fenstanton’s archaeological discoveries

Some may remember attending the  Recent Archaeological Discoveries Exhibition  on the 13th December 2017.      [ see poster ]

A most impressive array of artifacts was on display and the County Archaeologist together with the head of Albion, the specialist archaeologists who conducted the large-scale excavation, gave a joint presentation.

During the informative session, there was much alluded to, but for security reasons, they were unable to reveal details at that time. Also during the session is was announced that “...in the future, the BBC will be producing a programme about it“.

The extent of the discoveries were made public in December 2021 – which in archaeological terms, were quite outstanding and of immense national historical importance

Now it can be revealed:

The Cambridgeshire Crucifixion”  to be first transmitted Wednesday 10th January 2024  9.00pm  BBC4

A routine archaeological dig in Fenstanton reveals an incredible number of Roman remains,  with one of the skeletons discovered to have a nail through the heel bone. This was to be confirmed as a Roman crucifixion – the first discovered in Britain.

Dr Corinne Duhig investigates the evidence and performs CT scans as well as DNA and isotope analysis of the skeleton – an autopsy of the remains.  Joe Mullins carries out a full forensic facial reconstruction.

Fenstanton heralds the arrival of the Journal.

After fifty one years, Spectrum has finally retired, as have those volunteer stalwarts who have generously given their time over the decades.

Since 1972 a small team has quietly beavered away producing ten editions annually,  delivered free to every door in Fenstanton. Over the years, editors have changed and styles have varied but the parishioners have always been able to rely upon a regular copy to keep them updated regarding parish affairs.

The generosity continues where now a slightly larger team is now coordinating information from Fenstanton, Hilton and Fen Drayton, producing a combined edition covering all three parishes. As so much overlaps all three parish boundaries, both physically and notionally, it made a lot of sense to combine pre-existing community magazines into one. Sharing the common costs has provided better value for all.

Welcome to ‘The Journal‘ !

CRYSTAL LAKES – DSCNNCT Festival 1st JULY 2023

As you will be aware, there is a music event being held today at Crystal Lakes between the hours of 11:00 and midnight.

Last year there were many complaints about the sound levels and this year both HDC Licensing and Environmental Health departments have been liaising with the Organisers in an attempt to reduce the nuisance to both Fenstanton residents and those in adjacent villages. The Organisers have willingly agreed to do everything they can to minimise disturbance to the parish whilst at the same time,  providing their customers with a good experience.

A notice was placed on Facebook by the Organisers providing a telephone number for people to call if they are concerned.  However, Facebook is not the definitive method of communication and a great number of parishioners, especially the elderly, do not have internet access and certainly will not be aware of the event until today.

The Environmental Health Officer at HDC responsible for liaising with the Organisers has asked that the contact number is repeated so that it is in current view today.

Organiser’s Contact Number:   07940 905791 and will be operational between 10am and midnight today [1st July]

Complaints to HDC:

HDC has also asked that anyone who has a reasonable complaint should contact the Licencing department.  As mentioned above, there may be many who do not have internet access, so could I suggest that someone emails on their behalf, providing whatever details they wish?

So that complaints can be co-ordinated and then forwarded to HDC could they be sent to   [email protected]

A1307 Spittals to Fenstanton Biodiversity Improvements

National Highways are carrying out work to improve the biodiversity at several sites along the A1307 between Spittals Interchange and Fenstanton. We will be rotavating the sites and planting new greenery to mature and grow over the coming months.

We plan to complete these works over 5 months, between 28 November 2022 and March 2023. Some works will take place off-the network during the daytime, but works that require road closures will take place between 8pm and 6am on weeknights only, weather conditions permitting.

Closures and diversions

To carry out the work safely, we will need to close slip roads along the A1307 and divert traffic.

Monday 9 to Tuesday 10 January (8pm to 6am)
Junction 25 Hemingford Abbots – westbound lane 1 on the approach to J25, the westbound exit slip road and westbound entry slip road

Traffic will be diverted along the A1307 to Godmanchester interchange, turn around and re-join the eastbound carriageway and exit at New Road for Hemingford Abbots.
For traffic coming from local roads (Rideaway/ New Road) intending to head eastbound, the diversion is to join the A1307 eastbound to junction 26, turn around and re-join the westbound carriageway, following yellow diverted traffic signs.

– Wednesday 11 January (8pm to 6am)
Junction 26 St Ives – eastbound lane 1 on the approach to J26, eastbound exit slip road and eastbound entry slip road

Eastbound traffic will be diverted via St Ives Road, re-join the A1307 westbound to Godmanchester Interchange, turn around and re-join the A1307 eastbound.

–  Thursday 12 to Friday 13 January and Monday 16 to Wednesday 18 January (8pm – 6am)
Junction 26 St Ives – westbound lane 1 on the approach to J26, westbound exit slip road and westbound entry slip road

Westbound traffic will be diverted along the A1307 to Godmanchester Interchange, turn around and re-join the A1307 to exit from the eastbound slip road.
To travel westbound from Hilton and St Ives, traffic will be diverted onto the A1307 eastbound to Swavesey Northern Roundabout, turn around and re-join the A1307.

Monday 23 to Thursday 26 January
Junction 27 Fenstanton – westbound lane 1 on the approach to J27, westbound exit slip road and westbound entry slip road

For access to Fenstanton, westbound traffic will be diverted along the A1307 to J26, turn around and re-join the A1307 to exit from the eastbound slip road.
To travel westbound from Fenstanton, traffic will be diverted along the A1307 to Swavesey Northern Roundabout, turn around and re-join the A1307 westbound.
